Jaguars teach teachers

On April 17, 7th grade ELA students in Ms. Merry and Ms. Meissner’s class at Jackson Middle School participated in a “Teens Teach Teachers” activity.

7th grade ELA Teacher Heather Merry said the lesson is based on a unit in their Reading curriculum on Generations, where students are asked to consider what one generation can learn from another.

“We wanted to make the lesson more applicable to our students’ lives,” said Merry. “And so we asked students to work in teams and develop a lesson they could teach an older generation, something they feel confident about enough to teach an adult.”

Students formed small groups, created lesson plans, and taught JMS teachers and staff from throughout the building. Students presented topics and lessons on how to do something or things that an older generation did not do “correctly,” according to their generation.

“They’re going through what it’s like to be a teacher,” said Merry.

Students in two classes participated in the lesson, with teachers and staff stopping by throughout the day to learn something from students.

Four Jaguar students, Olivia, Evelyn, Samantha, and Laura, worked together to teach an adult how to use emojis correctly.

We taught Ms. Daly how to use emojis correctly,” said Evelyn. “We had to make a slideshow with the different steps and then create the directions. It was a great teamwork experience, and Ms. Daly did a great job.”

Teaching activities included:

  • How to catch a football
  • How to use emoji icons
  • How to crop someone/something out of a photo
  • How to use a 3d printing design program
  • How to use Snapchat filters
  • How to add photos or videos to a Snapchat story
  • How to post a photo to Instagram and tag someone
  • How to take a screenshot and upload it to a document or slideshow
  • How to play Roblox
  • How to play Slope game on the Chromebook
  • How to do a specific Tiktok dance
